3. Air and Sea Forts Maunsell

Place: United Kingdom

Period: 1942–1943

Expense: $15,500

The Maunsell Forts, located in the Thames and Mersey estuaries, were constructed during World War II as armed towers to protect the United Kingdom. Designed by Guy Maunsell, these structures served as army and naval forts, playing a crucial role in coastal defense.

Built between 1942 and 1943, the forts were equipped to withstand enemy attacks and provided strategic military support during the war. However, by the 1950s, the Maunsell Forts were formally decommissioned and left abandoned.

Since their decommissioning, the Maunsell Forts have largely been left undisturbed, with a few notable exceptions, such as their use for transmitting pirate radio. These unique structures are now accessible by boat for those interested in exploration, offering a glimpse into their fascinating history.

Currently, Project Red Sands is actively working to preserve the Maunsell Fort located in the Red Sands area, ensuring that this piece of history remains intact for future generations. However, only a few of the forts are formally accessible to the general public, making visits a special experience for those who can make the journey.
