14. Nike Missile Control Site

Place: Newport News, Virginia

Period: 1955

Expense: $12 million

In 1955, the U.S. Army initiated Project Nike, a significant endeavor aimed at establishing a network of air defense bases across the country, with a total investment of $12 million. This project was crucial to enhancing national security during the Cold War era, as it sought to protect the United States from potential aerial threats.

Among the various bases constructed, N-85 in Newport News, Virginia, holds a notable history. Originally a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II, this site underwent a dramatic transformation to become a missile base, reflecting the shifting priorities of military strategy in the post-war period.

Originally known as Camp Patrick Henry, N-85 was repurposed into a missile facility in 1958, serving as a base for the Nike Ajax missile system until its decommissioning in 1971. Today, remnants of its military past remain, with towering radar structures and abandoned buildings dotting the landscape.

The site has become a popular spot for urban explorers and thrill-seekers, drawn by its intriguing history and eerie atmosphere. However, visitors should exercise caution; the area is home to various snakes and unusual insects, making it essential to stay vigilant while exploring.
